Day-Tripping on Long Island

Long Island offers the perfect day-trip getaways for busy New Yorkers or out of towners as well as locals wishing to explore the Island before the summer comes to an end. Flanked by the LI Sound and the Atlantic Ocean, LI has a vast variety of beach activities that offer family fun for every age group. No matter where on Long Island you choose for your getaway, you are sure to have a memorable time surrounded by theaters, parks and campgrounds, vineyards, restaurants, shopping, and of course…beaches!

Relaxing on The South Shore

The South Fork of Long Island is home to the Hamptons and Montauk Point where tons of summer activities take place. The relaxed summer vibe, roadside farm stands and plentiful beaches make the East End one of the more popular day-trip spots on Long Island. Some of the top activities and places to see include Montauk Point Lighthouse, Cooper’s Beach, Long Island Aquarium, Montauk Point State Park, and take your pick of one of the many charter fishing boat trips available during the warmer weather. Whether you are local to the Island, are visiting for the summer, or just for the day, you are sure to find a warm weather activity to enjoy on LI’s South Shore. Also, be sure to check out Tanger Outlets, Ponquogue Beach and Gosman’s Dock.

With plenty of ferries leaving from Bay Shore and Patchogue and heading to Fire Island, there’s some great opportunities to explore the “hidden” beach communities right off of the mainland. Fire Island National Seashore features a 26 mile stretch of beaches and attracts visitors from around the world. Make sure to plan ahead since Fire Island is also one of the most popular day-trip destinations for our neighbors from NYC.

Exploring The North Shore

The North Fork of Long Island captivates with its charm and beauty which entices day-trippers to stay just a little longer. Impressive rocky bluffs characterize this region of LI and give it both charm and distinction. If you’re considering a day trip to the East End, the North Shore has many charming spots to explore such as Greenport Village – which is an idyllic village that was named one of the prettiest towns in the US. North Fork day-trippers will enjoy plenty of local spots that offer shopping, art galleries, parks, fishing, wine-tasting and vineyard tours, and delicious dining options.

The peak season for day trips on Long Island is late May through mid-September. Make sure to plan ahead and make your trip one to remember.
